Gain an insider’s perspective into the Lawrence-area art scene and shop directly from local artists during Art Spaces, a self-guided open studio tour. Art Spaces will be held on May 4th and 5th, with 50 artists participating at 18 locations. Pick and choose which locations to visit, or explore them all over the course of the weekend.

Participating artists, a sample image, and the map may be found on the Lawrence Art Guild website. Maps will be available at Art Emergency (721 E 9th) during the event and at Jewelry by Julie (17 W 9th) one week prior to the event during regular business hours.

Location number one is Art Emergency, an east-side arts warehouse. Just around the corner from Art Emergency, you can find Kyla Strid at her split-level studio garage at 934 Delaware. Leslie Kuluva is also in the neighborhood at LFK Press, her print and design studio located at 518 E. 8th Street.

Traveling a little further to the east will take you to the country home of painter Wendy Vertačnik and sculptor David Vertačnik. And on the west side of town you’ll find painter and photographer Erin Spiridigliozzi and painter and ceramicist Olee Olena.

In the center of Lawence, just off Iowa Street, the Valley Lane Studios Drawing Group will be at the home of Hobart and Shakura Jackson. This group has been working together meeting for life-drawing and conversation for over four decades.  Art-educated at institutions including Carnegie-Mellon, The KC Art Institute, KU, or SIU, some have served as faculty or staff members at KU. They will be ready to welcome you into their studio during Art Spaces.

Painters, sculptors, ceramic artists and more are located in studios throughout Lawrence. You will get to chat with them about their varying processes and see the places where they are creative and inspired. At Susan Poer’s studio visitors will even have a chance to play with clay, creating their own pinch pots.
