There’s no rest for Lawrence this month. That post-Halloween-pre-Christmas era is stuffed with events for Lawrencians of all ages as we gear up for a busy holiday season. From a spooky museum after hour tour to a night with our favorite jolly elf, here are the can’t-miss hometown happenings this November.

National Bison Day at KU Natural History Museum

National Bison Day

Natural History Museum | November 1

The KU Natural History Museum is hosting another pop-up science day with National Bison Day. Attendees will learn all about this keystone species of the Great Plaines, and even get a chance to try “Bison Goggles” to get a bison’s perspective of the world.

Watkins After Dark

Watkins Museum After Dark

Watkins Museum | November 1

If you’ve never been to a special after-hours event at the Watkins Museum, you’re in for a treat! This is where you can get a behind-the-scenes look at one of Lawrence’s most iconic buildings and even a sneak peek at some items that aren’t always on display. This is the second year for the annual event, and attendees will get to hunt for a secret code in the prohibition-era “Spookeasy.” The night comes with drinks, jazz, cards, dancing, and costumes are encouraged.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis: World Premiere Honoring 15 KU Icons

Lied Center of Kansas | November 6

In 2018, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis premiered Rock Chalk suite to honor 15 KU basketball legends. Once again, they are composing new work commissioned by the Lied Center, this time to honor important figures in KU History (including an astronaut, athlete, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner). This is a can’t-miss event with an exciting repertoire under the direction of Music Director Wynton Marsalis.

Taste of Lawrence 2025

Santa Rescue 2025

Holiday Lighting Ceremony and Santa Rescue

Downtown Lawrence | November 28

Are you even from Lawrence if you haven’t seen Santa get rescued off the roof of Weaver’s?

This is one of those unmistakable events in our quirky little town. Every year, Santa gets “stuck” on the roof and it’s up to the Lawrence Fire Department to rescue him. Hundreds of Lawrencians and their holiday-eager children will gather at 9th and Mass to witness the seasonal spectacle. The night also serves as the lighting ceremony, so don’t miss out on the chance to see a little holiday sparkle. A little birdie told us there will be a North Pole mailbox, so bring those letters to Santa along!

NoLaw Art Fest

NoLaw Art Fest

There’s nothing like kicking off the holiday shopping season with a little art fest. Venue 1235 is hosting this gathering of some of the area’s finest artists. There will also be crafting, music, and festive holiday cocktails. This event is free to attend.
