Encountering John Brown Exhibit

Be among the first to see the Encountering John Brown traveling exhibit at the Watkins Museum of History. Encountering John Brown explores the life and legacy of free state abolitionist John Brown through the eyes of those who knew him.

Learn even more about John Brown and his ties the area by attending Theatre Lawrence's entertaining live production of The Ballad of Black Jack. 

 

SATURDAY IS FOR FOOTBALL, FOOD, AND ART

 

Kick-off is 2:30 PM. Use this handy Game Day Guide to prepare for the big game. 

Before the game stroll through beautiful South Park in Downtown Lawrence where area artists will have their artwork on display for Art in the Park. This juried art show features the highest quality of work from local artists and craftspeople. Live music, food vendors, and family friendly activities make it a perfect stop before game time. The event begins at 10:00 AM. 

Make sure you get over to the Lawrence Arts Center before or after the game to see Ghosts of Segregation, a traveling exhibit of photographs by Richard Frishman. The exhibit explores the lingering presence of segregation, slavery and institutional racism hidden in everyday American architecture. It's a thought-provoking display that's well worth a visit. The Larwrence Arts Center is open daily from 9 AM - 9 PM, and the exhibit is free to view.

Burger Stand burgers

You will have surely built up an appetite cheering on the Jayhawks. Saturday is National Cheeseburger Day, so I would love to point you to some of the best burgers in town. It's a highly-debated topic amongst the townies, but some favs include the many burger varieties at The Burger Stand, Burgers by Biggs, and Dempsey's Burger Pub. Other highly recommended places for a good cheeseburger include Leeway Franks, RPG, Lawrence Beer Co., and Johnny's Tavern. If you've still got some gas left in your tank after dinner then find your way to one of Lawrence live music venues to catch some tunes. Live music lined up for Saturday night includes Elton Dan and the Rocket Band at The Bottleneck, Thighmaster (Tour Kickoff) // The Cryin' Angels // Cal in Red at The Replay, and The Mountain Goats at Liberty Hall. 

 

CAMPUS LIFE SUNDAY

KU Natural History Museum

Spend some time on the University of Kansas campus on Sunday. Don't miss the KU Natural History Museum. One of the exhibits at the Museum is the Paleo Plant Garden, and that's the theme of the day on Sunday. Learn all about the history of plants and enjoy a scavenger hunt for Discovery Day and take a part of the exhibit home at the Paleo Garden Plant Sale. 

You don't have to leave campus in search of great food. McClain's Market is the perfect on-campus stop for coffee, breakfast, lunch, and delicious pastries for the ride home.
