The Lawrence Art Guild's Art in the Park celebrates its 60th year this September 14th and 15th. It has grown from a local event where artists hung their work on snow fences within South Park to a juried two-day fine art fair with both local artists and those coming from across the country to participate. Live music fills the park on both days, and food trucks are available for both savory and sweet treats.

Work by Celia Smith

Painter Celia Smith has witnessed this change, participating in Art in the Park every year since the mid-sixties, missing only one fair in the sixty years that Art in the Park has been held. Celia will be participating again this year, and her paintings alone are reason to visit. With her suggestive lines, she is able to capture the curiosity of a cat, the playfulness of a puppy, the shyness of a deer, or the grace of a bird.

Some of Celia’s other works capture the essence of a landscape, whether it is the geometry of houses found on a hillside in Celia’s native country of Spain or the broad vistas of Kansas, which has been Celia’s home for 60 years.

Art in the Park continues to grow. This year, in the spirit in which Art in the Park was founded, two Lawrence Art Guild booths for artists to share exhibiting space will be added, and four emerging artists will be sponsored. These four emerging artists have never participated in a juried, outdoor fine art fair and will be provided space within a booth and panels to exhibit their work.
