Is it safe to come out of the house yet? Is the cold weather gone?? Probably not, but sunnier days are on the way! This month, we’re starting to see festival-like fun return as the temperatures start to warm up. Is the snow done? Probably not. But we love to fill our Spring days with music, dancing, and gardening. Lucky for you, Lawrence has all of these on tap for March. Here’s a look at this month’s Hometown Happenings:

CREES Spring Festival
March 1 | Liberty Hall
This is an annual Spring festival that has been growing in popularity with every passing year. It’s hosted by the KU Center for Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES), and will feature live performances, including one by Ukrainian folk dance troupe Mavka. There will also be a craft station, crepes, prizes, and more.

Lawrence Model Railroad Club Swap Meet
March 1 | Crown Automotive
Did you know Lawrence has a club for train enthusiasts? This model railroad club works to educate people about the history of the railroad in the United States using model railroads. The annual swap meet’s theme this year is “Santa Fe All the Way,” and will feature vendors and exhibitors. Note: this is the second day of the meet, with the first happening the day before on February 28.

Seed Starting Workshop
March 7 | Vinland Nursery
If you’re like me, winter is BRUTAL for those of us just itching to get back into the garden. Well, here’s a little something to hold you over. Vinland Nursery is hosting their seed starting workshop at the beginning of March. This is the perfect time to get to work planning out your garden. Start sowing your seeds now and before you know it, you’ll be walking through a full and thriving garden by Summer!

St. Patrick’s Day Parade
March 17 | Downtown Lawrence
We have to admit, this is one of our favorite days of the year. It’s so hard getting through a Kansas winter what with all the blizzards and ice. That’s why we love the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It’s the first real sign of warmer days ahead and family fun. Pack up the kids and come Downtown, they won’t have school anyway since they’re on Spring break! Our advice: bring a lawn chair. Of all the parades we watch in Lawrence, this one tends to be pretty long.

Senior Session: Three Generations of Yoshida Women Printmakers
March 26 | Spencer Museum of Art
This month, the Spencer Museum of Art is offering a chance to learn about three Japanese women printmakers from the Yoshida family—Fujio, Chizuko, and Ayomi.
The museum notes their innovative approaches tow oodblock printing reveal shifting ideas of artistic identity, family collaboration, and women’s empowerment in modern and contemporary Japan. Please note that seniors sessions are designed to accommodate older adults and are open to all.

Nick Hexum / Water Tower
The Granada | March 27
This one’s for you, 90’s kids! Nick Hexum, the vocalist and frontman for 311, is bringing his laid-back vibes to the Granada with his solo project. The man definitely keeps busy, with a rotating cast of musicians over the course of his solo EPS, including members of Water Tower (who will be joining him for this tour stop). Don’t expect to see his alternative rock background on this tour. He takes a more bluegrass and Americana vibe with his solo work.
