School is back in session but that doesn't mean the fun is over. Lawrence loves to kick their events into gear just as the seasons start to change. This month, there are some pretty big festivals, educational opportunities, and family-friendly events (with many of them free to the public). Here are some of the big draws this month, and be sure to check out the list of "Other events to keep on your radar" at the bottom.
Paper Plains Zine Fest
Various Locations | September 4-6
This event celebrating zines and zine culture is spread over several days and various locations this year. This year, you'll be able to dive into zine research at the Spencer Research Library, tour an art and design studio, and learn how to make zines yourself (there's even a children's workshop). We recommend perusing their website for full details.
Kirstie Lynn / Primrose Junction
The Replay | September 6
Kirstie Lynn, you have our attention. We love a good rowdy country girl, and Kirstie is bursting onto the local scene. She's a classically trained soprano, so expect her to hit some high notes. She'll be bringing her poetic brand of folk and country to the Replay for this early show with Primrose Junction. Be sure to check out her latest track, "Blazing Prairie Star."
Haskell Indian Art Market
Haskell Indian Nations University | September 12-13
This is hands down one of Lawrence's biggest and most exciting events of the year. Spread over an early September weekend, the Haskell Indian Art Show will bring visitors from far and wide to showcase the talent and cultural significance of Indigenous artists and performers. You'll want to come for the art and pottery, but stay for the food and exciting performances from dancers.
Monarch Watch Fall Open House
2021 Constant Avenue | September 12
I'm not gonna lie, this is a family favorite in our home. Pack up the kids and head to Foley Hall to celebrate the monarch migration. You can learn how to create waystations to support our pollinators, and pick up a few plants for our pollinator pals. This is a fun educational opportunity for anyone wanting to learn about tagging and supporting monarch butterflies during a vital time of year.
Art in the Park
South Park | September 19-20
September is a big month for unique art markets. Art in the Park, happening in downtown's beautiful South Park on September 19 & 20 is a juried fine arts and fine crafts event. 2026 will be the sixth year as a two-day event with over 20,000 visitors expected and over 130 artists participating. Live musical groups will create beautiful background music all day on both days, and food vendors will provide a wide variety of sweet and savory options.
The Magic of Motown
Lied Center | September 19
The exciting production celebrating one of the greatest ears in music is coming to the Lied Center this month. The Magic of Motown may even get you up and dancing and singing along to the music of The Temptations, The Jackson Five, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and more. This production features energetic vocals, choreography, and beautiful costumes to help get you moving.
Rev It Up Hot Rod Street Fest
South Park | September 26
The Rev It Up Hot Rod Street Fest is one of those Lawrence staples to help kick off the fall season. On Saturday, September 26, vehicles (and even a few bikes!) will line up the streets and lawns of South Park. There will be live music, vendors, and plenty of impressive vehicles on hand for gear heads (we've seen the Ghostbusters car at this event). Bring the kids, this is a very family-friendly event.
