We know there’s a certain “madness” happening with sports this month, but we’ll be following along with a different madness in the music scene. March is full of music events as Spring starts to creep in. There’s gentle bluegrass, hip-hop, and even a two-day rock-and-roll extravaganza. So let’s dive in! Be sure to also check out the “Other events to keep on your radar” list at the bottom!

Northside Social Jazz Jam

Jazz Society Jam Session

Northside Social | March 2

Jazz has always been a fixture in Lawrence, but it has REALLY taken off over the past year thanks to some organized events. One of those events that’s drawing a big crowd is the Jazz Society Jam Session at Northside Social. This is a new monthly event, occurring on the first Monday of the month, organized by Joseph Vaglio and Nick Weaver.

RIYL: Chilling by the river, listening to jazz interrupted by the occasional train whistle

redveil

redveil

The Bottleneck | March 7

redveil is a rapper and producer who’s already beginning to steal the spotlight early in his career, thanks to his intense lyricism. His independent production quality has also been known to turn heads. His self-awareness in his music and brutal honesty is what has been drawing fans across the country, not surprising as he’s someone who loves rap culture and lyricism.

RIYL: Early Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Freddie Gibbs

replay-o-rama

Replay-O-Rama Festival

The Replay | March 13 and March 14

Welp, this will absolutely be a bonkers night for all sorts of shenanigans and tomfoolery at the Replay (ah, the good old days). Replay-O-Rama is a two-day festival stuffed with bands filling out both the early and late shows. So far, the lineup is looking to be strictly punk, hardcore, and garage rock. Bring the earplugs unless you really want to sacrifice your hearing to the rock gods.

The lineup:

March 13:

  • Greg Wheeler & The Poly Mall Cops
  • Temps
  • The Whiffs
  • Wet Denim
  • Jackoffs
  • Cheap Glue
  • Blanky

March 14:

  • IBEX Clone
  • Wayne Pain and the Sh*t Stains
  • Cheap Fix
  • Pale Tongue
  • Discotek Mama
  • Burgers Gone Wild
  • Thimastr

RIYL: Moshing in tiny circles inside a dive bar, getting kicked in the shin, peeling your face off the floor

Nick Hexum

Nick Hexum / Water Tower

The Granada | March 27

This one’s for you, 90’s kids! Nick Hexum, the vocalist and frontman for 311, is bringing his laid-back vibes to the Granada with his solo project. The man definitely keeps busy, with a rotating cast of musicians over the course of his solo EPs, including members of Water Tower (who will be joining him for this tour stop). Don’t expect to see his alternative rock background on this tour. He takes a more bluegrass and Americana vibe with his solo work.

RIYL: Denim, Johnny Cosmic, Sensamotion
